Laughter like the trill of Christmas bells filled the air, and Josie appeared in the hole in the roof. She held a piece of paper in her hand, and as D.J. watched in confusion, Josie opened her fingers and sailed the paper free.
D.J. reached out shaking fingers and caught what she could now see was a photo. Swallowing against the thickness in her throat, she blinked back the tears flooding her eyes and focused on the scene she held in her hands.
A wedding picture, the couple standing together amid brilliant wildflowers, the trees circling the field an array of summer greens. The bride in a dress of flowing blue, feet bare beneath the long hem. The man smiling into the woman's eyes, his love clear for all to see.
Looking up once more, D.J. met the gaze of the woman above her. They smiled into each other's eyes as the truth flowed between them. D.J.'s fingers tightened on the picture in her hand.
A picture of her father and JosieD.J.'s angel.
